The world’s eyes are on Dubai tonight as we wait to witness the emirate’s predicted entry into the record books for the largest fireworks in history.
A total of 400,000 fireworks are set to explode above the emirate’s skies in just six minutes, launched from more than 400 locations stretched along 100km of coastline on the Palm Jumeirah and The World Islands.
The show has to topple Kuwait’s previous record of 77,282 shots of fireworks spread across five kilometres in 64 minutes.
Topping it off will be the centrepiece – a 225 metre wide flag conjured from fireworks in the sky. This is also expected to break another record for the largest pyrotechnic flag ever.
At last count Dubai already held 103 world records – so we can look forward to two more tonight.
But that’s not all, with another jaw-dropping display taking place in Downtown Dubai.
A conceptual display separated into ten acts is expected to burst out of the Burj Khalifa, with more than a million visitors expected to cram into the Downtown area. Meanwhile the Metro will run continuously until midnight on Wednesday January 1.
Firework displays will also light up other landmarks of the city, including Madinat Jumeriah, Burj Al Arab, and Dubai Festival City.
The bumper celebration comes after a great year for Dubai, which climaxed with the city winning the Expo 2020 in late November.
