Crescent moon sighting in Saudi prompts official announcement

The UAE has announced that Sunday November 7 will be the first day of Dhu Al Hijja.

This means that Eid Al Adha will start nine days later on Tuesday November 16 although official holidays for the government and private sectors have yet to be announced..

The news comes after the sighting of a crescent moon in Saudi Arabia. The hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the largest annual gathering in the world and will start next Sunday.

The Haj is the world’s largest annual gathering and will see around 1.5m Muslims converge on the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in western Saudi Arabia.
