Jeff Dunham in Abu Dhabi

The man voted America’s favourite comedian is coming to Abu Dhabi

The man voted America’s favourite comedian is coming to Abu Dhabi. Trying not to move her lips, Caitlyn Davey speaks to the master of puppetry.

You have an extensive repertoire of guest puppets. Do you have a favourite character you like to work with?
I don’t have a favourite. Whatever audiences respond to is my favourite at the time, so I’m a bit of a chameleon. On the other hand, Achmed has garnered international attention and has opened the doors for performances in some amazing places.

What would you say is the hardest part of mastering ventriloquism and performing shows?
Like anything else, it’s not hard if you’re really interested in what you are learning. The ventriloquist must simply learn to imitate what a voice sounds like from far away, or from whatever distance the voice is supposed to be ‘thrown’. But learning ventriloquism for the purpose of performing with the ‘vent figure’ [puppet] requires no such illusion, as the character is usually sitting right next to the ventriloquist. However, learning to speak without moving your lips is learning to talk in an entirely new way. Anyone can learn ventriloquism – and just like learning any new skill, the practice and dedication to accomplish the task is in direct correlation with the ability to master the craft. The hardest part is writing funny material.

Which of your characters is most excited to come to Abu Dhabi?
I’d have to say Achmed.

You’re bringing all the crew – are they all good with travelling? Who has the most trouble at customs?
Oh yes, they’ve been around the world and I’ve never heard a complaint out of any of them. Until they get on stage, that is!

Have you got any plans for new characters or additions to your act?
There’s a little spot in my act where I throw in something brand new every time. I’ve gone through the really nervous Y2K guy and Melvin the Superhero. But for every one that’s succeeded, there’s one where I really don’t know what I was thinking. I have Tony the Talking Meatball, and that one never worked. There’s only one good joke I can use for him: ‘Do you speak Italian? No, because I don’t have-a no hands.’

What’s your favourite part of your job?
Having fun with the audience and making people laugh.
Jeff Dunham is performing at the Du Forum, May 1-2, tickets from Dhs295, www.ticketmaster.ae (800 86 823).
