Search for the perfect jeans

Kelly Lundberg shares her tips on choosing the right pair of jeans

What’s trendy for the upcoming winter season?
Colour blocking is still a hot trend right now, but with autumnal colours; mustard, maroon, forest green, and purple for example. Of course there is a lot of knitwear around just now, embrace it with caution given our climate, look for lighter pieces you can layer, sleeveless or fun accessories!

What’s your advice for pulling off brightly coloured jeans?
Go for it! It’s a great look that you can dress up or down. I have styled many with a great blazer and heels and equally as many casual with a cute pair of ballet pumps and a quirky blouse or t-shirt. Naturally you want a pair that fits, some are slightly higher waisted, and some are very low; try lots on to find a pair that works with your body shape. If you are on the shorter side, make sure you wear heels or wedges to elongate your silhouette.

There are so many types of jeans nowadays, how do you know what ones are right for you?
They feel great on! There are occasions when you may need to try on over 10 pairs to find a pair that feels divine. In your wardrobe, the staples are a great pair of casual blue jeans you can wear with flats, a darker evening pair you would wear with heels – these could be black or a dark blue – plus a fun pair of coloured or white as an added extra. You want to wear a pair that are fitted, but not cutting off the circulation; jeans do stretch, but not a whole two sizes. The size after all is just a number!

Any faux-pas we should know of?
The biggest mistake is wearing a cut too low, and everything hangs out over the top. There are enough brands to find a cut to suit your figure, whether that is a wider pair to compensate for slightly larger thighs/hips, a higher cut to hold everything in, a skinny pair or – my personal favourite right now – a straight cut (worn with heels). My other pet peeve is wearing jeans that are meant for flat shoes, and you wear them with heels, it makes you look short and it’s just not flattering.

What are you favourite denim brands?
Personally I find when styling clients J Brand are a front-runner due to their choice and stretch. They accommodate most styles: skinny, straight, boot cut – plus they have a fabulous coloured range of jeans. On the high-street, for a great budget pair check out New Look as they also stock regular and longer leg, Autograph and Banana Republic for a fuller figure and Zara for their collection of straight leg jeans right now. www.divine.au
