The UAE is famed for it’s shopping malls – you can hardly take a step in the city without stumbling into one and dropping your rent money on a designer clutch or a pair of must-have heels. This might seem like a fashion-lovers dream, but what if you’re after something a little more personal? Well, those looking for a real shopping experience might want to pay a visit to Maison Sez – Abu Dhabi’s newest boutique store. Born and bred in Abu Dhabi, owner Madonna Morgan felt there was something missing from the capital’s shopping scene – and made it her mission to bring a more personal touch to city with the opening of Maison Sez earlier this year. We caught up with her for a chat.
How did you first get into fashion?
Fashion is something that I have been passionate about for a long time and it is a vital part of my life. I am a great admirer of women who dress fabulously on a daily basis. My mother is very fashion savvy and she used to dress me up and take me to fashion shows when I was younger. I think this is where my love of fashion came from and it started from such a young age.
What inspired you to open Maison Sez?
I felt that there was a real gap in the market here in Abu Dhabi for a boutique. There is such a mall culture here, and I wanted to provide people with something different – something more personalised. I moved back to Abu Dhabi after I graduated, and I wanted to open a place where customers could not only buy pieces by some of the world’s hottest up-and-coming designers, but also where they could have a unique shopping experience. I am inspired by anyone who makes their dreams into reality, especially young Arab women doing this sort of thing in the fashion industry worldwide.
Which brands do you stock?
We have some of the most coveted and exclusive brands from around the world including Rebecca Taylor, Vivienne Westwood, Robert Rodriguez, Nicole Miller and Ambre & Babzoe, to name a few! I adore Rebecca Taylor – her pieces are amazing and I love the way they look and feel. I swear they make you look slim too. I am also a huge fan of Vivienne Westwood. I love everything about her and find her intriguing. The boutique is a destination boutique, housed in a villa, which has a homely yet exclusive feel to it.
What are the main fashion trends for autumn/winter?
On a recent trip to London and Milan, I saw a lot of interesting eyeliner trends that were really bold and funky. There is a definite spotlight on the ’40s and ’60s eras, and we will be seeing a lot of glitter and sparkles. In terms of footwear the chunky heel is back in a big way.
Is there a particular celebrity whose style you admire most?
I would have to say Olivia Palermo. She always looks so immaculate and she is so feminine. I love the way she always looks so groomed and polished without looking like she has put a lot of effort in. Celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Leighton Meester, Khloe Kardashian and Gwen Stefani are often seen wearing some of the brands I stock, which is very exciting.
