Manchester City’s Javi Garcia in Abu Dhabi

We catch up with Spanish Man City midfielder

You were in Abu Dhabi recently to meet Manchester City fans. What did you think of our fine city?
The weather at this time of year is very nice as there is not much sunshine in Manchester at the moment! One of the first things that struck me was the mix of the old and the new and how friendly people are. Hopefully I will be back for a longer holiday in the future.

Can you tell us more about the Man City School of Football at Zayed Sports City?
I met all the young players on the first morning of my visit and the skills on show were very impressive. It was great to see them all training and reminded me of when I was a child – there was so much enthusiasm. The coaching staff are from Manchester City so the standards are very high, which is great for the boys and girls.

So, how have you found life in the Premier League since your move to Man City?
I had watched a lot of English football and so I was expecting it to be high tempo and that is exactly how it has been. The speed at which the game is played is incredible really and I know it will improve me as a player.

What’s the main difference between playing in Portugal and England?
The speed of play is a lot different and there are quality players in all the teams, so no game is ever easy. Off the pitch I have to say I miss the Spanish food and so my girlfriend is making dishes from back home all the time.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve been recognised?
Probably here as I didn’t expect so much attention! There really are Manchester City fans all over Abu Dhabi.

What was it like to score for Man City in your debut game against Stoke?
It was a fantastic moment for me and helped me relax. It is just the type of thing you need when you join a new club.

Who’s the toughest player you’ve ever faced?
I have played against both Messi and Ronaldo and you cannot pick between them really. They are amazing players.

Who’s the biggest practical joker at Man City?
There are lots of them but I’m not sure yet as they have not done anything to me.

Who chooses the music in the dressing room on a match day?
Joleon Lescott controls all the music and some of it is okay. But there’s a lack of Spanish music I have to say.
Javi was in town to meet fans at the official CityStore shop in Marina Mall.
