Starting November, the lonely dirham will no longer be sufficient to pay your fare on an Abu Dhabi public bus. The municipality announced its plans to increase the fare by 100 percent, in an effort to address the widespread misuse of the system. It’s reported that many people have been riding for free and as of yet there is no system to enforce payment. In the works are plans to introduce an automated system, very similar to the Nol card system used for the metros and public transport in Dubai. Until these are in place though, make sure to pack Dhs2 for the bus.
