Wedded bliss

I’ve recently moved from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, and, to make up for the sleepier lifestyle, I’ve become something of a cultural connoisseur. This seems to suit Abu Dhabi, it’s like Dubai’s older more elegant brother. But guys, where’s the Royal Wedding? I’ve looked through every hotel website I can think of, but nothing, and I really don’t fancy driving back and forth to Dubai, but I would like to absorb a little of the patriotic atmosphere, rather than sitting at home watching it on TV. Do you have any ideas?

You’re right, compared with Dubai, places to watch the regal nuptials are as scarce as the hair on Prince William’s head. But there are a handful of venues where you’ll be able to join a patriotic throng to watch royal event of the century.

First up, there will be a royal wedding brunch at Abu Dhabi Golf Club (02 558 8990), where you can continuously charge your glass to the lovely couple with some free flowing beverages, and listen to some classic British tunes. The price for all this fun is Dhs265 per person.

Meanwhile, The Club in Mina Port is undoubtedly the hub of Abu Dhabi’s British expat community, so you wouldn’t expect this place to miss the opportunity for a wedding-themed knees up, hence there are actually two rival bashes going on here. Firstly, the St David’s Society & Royal Society of St George is putting on brunch from 1pm-6.30pm, costing Dhs145 each. This promises to be almost as classy a do as the actual nuptial ceremonies at Westminster Abbey in London, with a strict formal dress code.

Also, The Club’s imaginatively named The Restaurant eatery will be decked out in Union Jack bunting and flags for an authentic street party. Expect British-style finger foods and drinks, and probably more than a few choruses of ‘God Save the Queen’. This family-friendly event runs from noon-5pm, and tickets cost Dhs80 for members and Dhs100 for non-members. Call 02 673 1111 for details.

Finally, should you prefer a more informal place to watch the wedding, Stars ’n’ Bars at Yas Marina & Yacht Club will be screening all the action from London. Call 02 565 0101 to find out more.

And if you really can’t be bothered to leave the sofa, tune into the BBC Entertainment channel from noon (8am GMT) and you’ll be able to settle down, wipe your teary eyes and try to spot all the celebrity attendees.
