We all know Abu Dhabi is made up of loads of islands, and we know some of them are still largely untouched by development.
For every hub like Yas Island or Saadiyat Island, there’s a Lulu Island or Rahman Island lying dormant.
Some, such as Al Maya or Nurai are home to beach resorts, places to get away from it all for a weekend, and others, such as Hudayriat are just starting to be transformed into destinations.
You can now add Jubail island to that list.
Most of you will have driven over it – it’s the huge space between Yas and Saadiyat – but we doubt many have stopped on it at any point.
Well, by 2022 all that is set to change as Jubail Island Investment Company (JIIC) has announced a Dhs5 billion plan to develop the land.
Once complete, the 400-hectare island is set to be home to up to 6,000 people and is being described as Abu Dhabi’s nature zone.
As reported in our sister title Arabian Business, Mounir Haidar, managing director of JIIC, says: “Jubail Island will cater to families, wellness, wildlife and nature enthusiasts, including water sports activities, as well as offering a unique quality of life for homeowners and visitors alike.
“With its wide variety of residential, retail, hospitality, entertainment, and education offerings, the project is poised to become an important contributor to the Abu Dhabi real estate market in line with the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.”
He adds: “The breath-taking development will significantly enhance the capital’s market offering for quality properties. Jubail Island will offer investors well-priced and sizable plots in a low-density community surrounded by spectacular natural elements, such as beautiful waterfronts, beaches, mangroves and neighbourhood parks.
“A five-hectare heritage site, where pottery and other relics of early civilisation that have been discovered on the site will be on display, is set to be another key attraction.”
We can’t wait to see it take shape.
