New Abu Dhabi supermarket ditches plastic bags

Carrefour is doing its bit to reduce single-use plastics

We all want to do our bit for the environment, from bringing reusable coffee cups with us when we want a brew and saying no using plastic straws when sipping our favourite drinks.

More can be done, old habits can be broken and one the most popular supermarket chains in the country is leading the way at its latest branch.

Carrefour has just opened in the new eco-friendly mall My City Centre Masdar.

The latest store is the brand’s 100th in the country and with a shiny new location and a staunch eco-stance we’re sure it will prove popular too.
The mall itself is incredibly progressive in its approach with 80 percent of the operational waste being recycled, the use of energy efficient elevators and escalators, LED lighting and the use of local building materials during construction to reduce the shopping destination’s carbon footprint.

“We started this journey almost 25 years ago with our first Carrefour hypermarket that set the standard of everyday grocery shopping in the UAE,” says Hani Weiss, chief executive officer of Majid Al Futtaim – Retail.

“Over the years we have continued to redefine this experience for our customers… pioneering environmental credentials – like our Masdar store.”
