Everything you need to know about Abu Dhabi’s new road tolls

Drivers need to be registered before January 1 2020

It’s official – Abu Dhabi is getting road tolls from January 1 2020.

Four toll gates will be in place on four bridges on the way into the capital and drivers will have to pay Dhs4 during peak weekday hours and Dhs2 on Fridays, public holidays and off-peak hours.

The maximum anyone will pay per day is Dhs16.

All drivers coming to Abu Dhabi will need to register for the system and will be able to do so online from August 30 2019.

You will need to set up an account, register your vehicle and number plate and top up a wallet with money.

Anyone who drives through one of the gates without being registered will have ten days to set up an account or be fined.

The fines will be Dhs100 for the first day after the grace period, Dhs200 for the second and Dhs400 for the third – rising to a maximum Dhs10,000. Non-Abu Dhabi vehicles will be fined Dhs50 per day.

There will also be a fine of Dhs10,000 for anyone who tampers with their number plates to avoid the toll and anyone who damages the toll gates themselves or a payment machine.

Ambulances, armed forces and civil defence vehicles, public buses, motorcycles, licensed taxis, authorised school buses, passenger buses carrying at least 26 passengers, police and Ministry of Interior vehicles, electric vehicles and trailers are exempt from the tolls.

The four toll gates are at Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Mussafah Bridge and Al Maqta’a Bridge.
