Three family-friendly films to watch this month

Chill out in an air-conditioned cinema with the kids this summer

The Queen’s Corgi
From the writers of Gnomeo & Juliet (don’t worry, it gets better), comes this sassy story about Rex (voiced by Jack Whitehall), a corgi owned by Queen Elizabeth II (Julie Walters), who finds himself locked out of the palace and off on an adventure. The plot – about making unlikely friends and working together to get back into the palace – is for kids, but many of the gags are for the parents escorting them to the cinema. Look out for Jon Culshaw’s short, sweet and smarmy turn as a visiting Donald Trump, and keep an ear out for Ray Winstone’s gravelly tones as muscled pit bull terrier Tyson.
Due out Thursday August 1

The Angry Birds Movie 2
Three years on from the release of The Angry Birds Movie, Jason Sudeikis is back as Groucho-browed Red. Though still odds with King Mudbeard and the Bad Piggies, when a new foe appears on the horizon the warring groups decide to work together for the survival of both tribes. Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage all return to voice characters in the film, while newcomers include rapper Nicki Minaj as bird Pinky and Awkwafina as pig Courtney. The first Angry Birds film became the second highest-grossing video game film of all time behind Warcraft. Will their return top it…?
Due out Thursday August 8

Dora and The Lost City of Gold
The first live-action film version of Nickelodeon’s television series Dora the Explorer, Isabela Moner (Instant Family) plays the fearlessly adventurous titular character. But having spent most of her life in the jungle, little there could have prepared her for the most daunting place of them all – high school.  But it’s not long before she’s out from behind a desk and leading a ragtag band of explorers out to save her parents and solve an ancient Incan mystery. (And yes, there’s monkey. Voiced by Danny Trejo.) Michael Peña (Crash) and Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) star as Dora’s parents.
