5G arrives at Dubai’s Burj Khalifa

The world’s tallest tower now comes with some of the world’s fastest data speeds

All of a sudden, 5G is sort of just… here.

Years of chat about how lightning fast everything will be come 2020 has actually started to be realised by the UAE’s big mobile networks – du and Etisalat – and is now available in the real world, according to a report from Arabian Business.

Now, you and your 5G-ready phone (on Etisalat) can get that eye-wateringly fast mobile connection when you visit Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower.

It’s all about making your experience as fast as possible, so you can stream live 4K video in real-time, or download big, ultra-HD videos in seconds, or stream mobile gaming from the cloud, all on the go.

Download speeds are allegedly set to peak at more than 20 times those of 4G, and by reducing connectivity time, latency and lag, you’ll be able to chew up more services like virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), use more wearable technology and hop aboard self-driving transport that’s all connected.

What’s more, more than 1,000 5G towers are set to go up across the UAE before the end of the year, meaning that coverage won’t be so limited to hot-spots and densely populated areas.

Elsewhere, you can now get a 5G home router across the country on du’s network, so your non-5G devices can get all of those massive speeds, too.
