Brunch review: Hip-hop brunch at Back Yard Bistro, Abu Dhabi

A quirky afternoon at The Hub at WTC Abu Dhabi

We think it’s fair to say that Back Yard Bistro is a bit of an unusual venue. There really isn’t anywhere like it in Abu Dhabi. Inside you’ll find an industrial garage kind of vibe, with truck parts used for seats, tables and even the DJ booth. Even the sinks in the bathroom are made from petrol pumps operated by foot pedals. This place, found at The Hub at The Mall at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi, doesn’t do half measures but while the indoor space is committed to an Americana theme, but the outdoors is another matter entirely.

The alfresco space is much more relaxed and less cluttered. The huge area has big screens for sport and garden-type furniture and feels more like a shisha lounge than the sports bar with frenetic décor that can be found just metres away.

Unusual it may be, but it’s also very popular and since starting in October, Friday’s hip-hop brunch has been a sell-out every week. The tables are all full (and socially distanced) and the atmosphere is lively, which is great to see considering the year the city’s bars and restaurants have endured so far.

As the name might suggest, there’s an old-school hip-hop theme, with music coming from  on a Friday too so we enjoy listening to DJ Cliff Townley plus guests each week.

The most noticeable thing early on in proceedings is the service, it really is swift and the staff have their eye on the ball when it comes to replenishing glasses.

On the menu is a mix of bar food. For starters we get nachos, chicken wings, chicken tenders, onion rings, spring rolls and more. The nachos hit the spot and the chicken wings and salty fries are a hit. Chicken tenders are the high point of this course. The spring rolls and onion rings aren’t brilliant but are enjoyable enough.

It’s classic bar food. Humble and tasty, no fuss, no frills, no complications. Will it win a Michelin star? Unlikely, but given the situation we’ll take it.

The mains tell a similar story. First up are chicken and beef sliders, which get a second ordering, followed by a flatbread pizza. Crisp and cheesy, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a few drinks and is probably the best thing on the menu.

The party and live music is happening indoors but for a more chilled afternoon you should take a seat on the terrace. You will still be able to hear the tunes and the service remains swift.

It’s good value, coming in at under Dhs300 for the premium package, and you can also add on three hours of drinks once it’s over for an extra Dhs120 (it’s Dhs150 if you haven’t done the brunch). All in all it’s a top afternoon, the food hits the spot, the drinks are free-flowing and the entertainment is excellent.

It’s not hard to see why you need to book far in advance to get a seat.
