Art Exhibitions in Abu Dhabi

Larry Gagosian’s exhibition, the Fanaan group and more

Up Close
Nine artists from South Africa, Britain, the Middle East and elsewhere present their third show since forming the Abu Dhabi-based Fanaan group in 2008. Among the artists’ latest works are sculptures, textiles, paintings and digital pieces, all of which are on display for the first time. Best of all, each artist is scheduled to hold workshops to discuss their techniques and the inspiration behind their creations. Daksha Bulsara’s talk on October 5 could be the most interesting of them all, as the biologist-cum-painter theorises on the role of science in the evolution of abstract art.
National Theatre, until October 6.

RSTW
Having already hosted the likes of Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, this blockbuster of a show sees Abu Dhabi add Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol (from whom RSTW derives its name) to its rapidly growing collection of A-list exhibitors. It is all thanks to legendary New York-based art impresario Larry Gagosian, who has brought his previously unseen private collection of artwork to the city. This pop art extravaganza is undoubtedly the biggest art event of the year for the capital, and should not be missed by anyone.
Manarat Al Saadiyat, until January 24.

The Art of Sumayyah Al Suwaidi
Hailed as the first digital Emirati artist (meaning she creates images with computers, not that she’s a robot), Sumayyah Al Suwaidi pitches her cartoon-like images as a means of escapism from the often overbearing chaos of urban life. It’s a brief show, so grab a glimpse of this promising local talent while you can.
Ghaf Gallery, October 3-13.

Abu Dhabi Classics
Returning from the summer break, the city’s classical music season kicks off once again this month. First to grace the stage at the Emirates Palace grand auditorium is Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, one of the world’s top-rated symphony orchestras. The capital will also host the Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle and pianist Arcadi Volodos. Prepare your eardrums accordingly.
Emirates Palace, October 6.

The Dawn of a New Day
Appearing for the first time in the Middle East, celebrated artist Alfonso Borghi is Dhabi-bound at the end of this month. Though the solo exhibition also includes some of the Italian’s sculptures, all eyes will be on his rich, layered canvases – particularly his typically abstract tribute to the UAE ‘Burj Khalifa’. All works due to be on show will also be for sale, so bring your chequebook if you fancy leaving with a souvenir.
Acento Gallery, October 31-November 18.
