Al Ain Classical Music Festival 2008

Now in its eighth year, the Al Ain Classical Music Festival has expanded its programme to 11 days and includes venues in both Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. This year’s festival is presided over by Massimo Nebuloni, project and tour manager of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s world-famous opera house

March 6
Al Ain Municipality Theatre, Al Ain
For the first time in the region, Mozart’s Don Giovanni will be performed in Arabic by a cast of opera singers from Lebanon, accompanied by one of Europe’s most prominent orchestras, the Warsaw Philharmonic.

March 7
Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain
Al Ain’s historic Al Jahili Fort will be the dramatic setting for a concert of opera favourites, where the Warsaw Philharmonic will be accompanying three sopranos, performing some of opera’s best-loved arias, duets and ensembles from such masters as Bizet, Verdi, Rossini, Mozart and Puccini.

March 8
Emirates Palace Auditorium
One of the top five orchestras in the world, Staatskapelle Dresden from Germany, will perform a concert of Wagner’s works, under the musical direction of its highly-esteemed conductor, Fabio Luisi.

March 11
ADMA-OPCO Theatre
For the last 20 years, the Swiss duo Sybille and Isabel Tshopp have been playing for audiences all over the world to critical acclaim. Violinist Sybille and her sister Isabel, a pianist, will perform some of Mozart and Brahms’ sonatas.

March 13, 14, 15
Al Jahili Fort
Under conductor Pietro Mianiti and hailing from one of the world’s most famous opera houses, La Scala in Milan, the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala String Orchestra will be performing works by Puccini and Vivaldi (13th), as well as accompanying two sopranos, a tenor and baritone in a concert of great Italian operatic works, including highlights from Rossini’s Barber of Seville and Verdi’s Vespri Siciliani (14th). Finally, they will perform an unusual version of Prokofiev’s Peter And The Wolf, combining Arabic narration with music from Beethoven’s Fifth (15th).

The festival will also feature workshops with some of Europe’s leading artistic directors, which will be held at the ADMO-OPCO Theatre in Abu Dhabi on March 9, 11 and 12. Free of charge and open to all (booking is required).
