Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival

The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival returns for a fifth year, bringing the great and the good of opera, ballet, music and art in 12 events over 12 days here in the UAE capital. The programme features concerts, gala events and an exhibition as well as a symposium of lectures, demonstrations and workshops

The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) needs little introduction; regarded as one of the world’s greatest, they’re celebrating their 75th birthday this season. Since 1992 they have been resident at London’s Royal Festival Hall, in the cultural heart of the city’s Southbank and performing at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival for nearly 45 years. Principle Conductor Vladimir Jurowski will be at the helm for his inaugural season and the two concerts will feature internationally renowned soloists – violinist Nicolaj Znaider and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

The Bolshoi Ballet is one of the principal and oldest ballet companies in Russia. Part of the Bolshoi Theater, they’re internationally acclaimed for superb ensemble skills and spectacular realism of its scenery and costumes, and their preservation of 19th century ballet traditions. Conducted by Pavel Sorokin, they’ll be performing their acclaimed production of Tchaikovsky’s classic, Swan Lake.

Soprano Anna Netrebko has been described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘the reigning new diva of the 21st century’ and since her triumphant Salzburg Festival debut in 2002 as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, has gone on to appear with mant of the world’s great opera companies.

Together with Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garança, (a frequent guest with leading symphony orchestras) and Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, they will perform some of Mozart and Verdi’s best-loved Arias in the Opera Gala, accompanied by the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra.

Violinist Sarah Chang first wowed audiences aged eight, at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Born in Philadelphia in 1980 to Korean parents, she is now widely recognised as one of the most gifted instrumentalists of her generation, and will be performing Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons, accompanied by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

Iraqi Oud virtuoso, Naseer Shamma has composed music for films, plays and television, and is well-known for his distinctive style of incorporating traditional oud methods with modern compositions. He’ll premiere eight new compositions, accompanied by a 60-piece oriental orchestra.

There will also be an exhibition of works by contemporary Tunisian artist, Nja Mahdaoui, whose calligraphic masterpieces will be on display in the Emirates Palace foyer throughout the festival.
