Wagyu burger, Y-bar
Why would you mince wagyu beef? We just don’t know. Nevertheless, this costly (Dhs77) delicacy is worth a punt. We found it a bit juicy and struggled to even get our mouth around its ample buns, but it tastes great, even if the truffle mayo and porcini mushrooms did little. Besides, the excellent thick-cut chips rescued the day.

Ostrich loin, Mombasa Grille
We don’t know much about the demand for ostrich in the UAE, but Mombasa Grille are clearly banking on a sudden surge in popularity. In truth, it’s not bad at all and at Dhs130, it is about half the cost of your average hunk of wagyu or buffalo.

Buffalo steak, Rodeo Grill
Those expecting a flavour sensation will be a little disappointed. Compared to Rodeo Grill’s tastier wagyu steaks, buffalo is a far gentler affair – in fact, you struggle to define any distinct flavour other than general meatiness. Nevertheless, it is an experience and usually cooked to perfection here. It’s just that you’ve got to pay for the privilege and at Dhs322 for a fillet and Dhs280 (plus 16 per cent) for the rib eye, you might think twice.

Australian wagyu rib eye, Brue Grill
The rib eye is a sleek bit of kit. Yes, it’s a little fatty on the edge, but you expect that from a rib eye. The flavour is all there and, even if the chefs are a little heavy on the seasoning, it is still a mighty hunk of beef and costs a stately Dhs225 (plus 16 per cent). Although, for our money, this restaurant serves the greatest onion rings in the capital.

Charcuterie, Chamas
There is little doubt that Chamas is enormously fun, but it’s also excellent quality. Turn your card green and men saunter by whittling off slices of flavoursome lamb and beef, tart with garlic, salt and sweet marinades. Some of the best meat in town, and for Dhs215 net, they’ll stuff you until you burst. Nice.
