A day in the life of a delivery driver

Ever wondered what it’s like to deliver takeaway food?

Room Service Delivery driver Ahmad Al Khani talks us through a day in his professional life

Name: Ahmad Al Khani.
Age: 28.
Nationality: Syrian.

How long have you been working as a delivery guy with RSD?
Since 2005.

How many deliveries do you have to make in a day?
On average, 12.

What time of day is the busiest?
I’m always busy between 6pm and 10pm.

When do you prefer to work and why?
Evening shifts, so I can do more orders.

What’s the furthest you had to travel to deliver food?
From Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

What’s the biggest order you’ve had to deliver?
One was worth Dhs7,000.

Can you tell us about a funny experience you’ve had on the job?
I had a delivery in one of the high-rise residential towers. After dropping off the food I was walking back down the corridor and I accidently walked into a flat of a tenant thinking it was an access door to the lifts. A man and his wife were sitting relaxed on the sofa. I felt very embarrassed but they laughed which made me laugh as well.

What’s the one thing about your job that you don’t like?
When RSD dispatch does not call me and I have to wait for an order.

What’s the one thing about your job you love?
Delivering delicious and warm food to our clients.

Have you had any difficult customers, and if so, can you tell us about them?
I had a few difficult clients that did not want to pay. Our operation manager takes care of such issues.

What’s it like on the roads of Abu Dhabi?
I have to pay attention all the time to avoid accidents. Luckily I am not on a bike anymore as I was promoted to car duty, thank God!

Have you ever delivered food to an address where the customer turned out to be famous?
Not the customer but while delivering an order once I met Roger Federer in an elevator.

Do the delivery guys at RSD compete among each other to get the most deliveries in a day?
Yes sometimes especially during busy periods like Eid or Christmas when we are submerged. We compete to see who makes most deliveries.

How long did it take you to learn how to get around the city when you first started working?
About a month.

If you could say one thing to customers, what would it be?
Thank you, order more and enjoy your food.
