Sportsman’s Arms review

American-Irish gastropub in Abu Dhabi has big, hearty portions

Sportsman’s Arms, we applaud you. The new gastropub in Zayed Sports City is a breath of fresh air for those seeking a big meal in a relaxed and friendly environment. And there’s nothing quite like dining on good, hearty food in an international sports stadium.

Arriving at the venu,e we are met by beaming smiles from enthusiastic staff and led through the large bar and lounge to our dining table. The whole place is kitted out with wooden decking and features multiple widescreen televisions for live sport, including a huge projector screen. There are two terraces available for al fresco dining (which we recommend), which offer views of the courts and play area below.

We love the simplicity of the menu. It’s typical pub grub, but done very, very well. We opt for the “wings on fire” and the pea soup of the day to start. The chicken wings are spicy – not mouth-burning hot – and deliciously sticky, and the pea soup is thick, creamy and minty. We follow up with the Atlantic cod covered in a golden, crisp batter served with chips and mushy peas, and the New York strip with chunky chips. Both are huge portions and immaculately presented. The steak is thick, perfectly cooked (medium) and juicy, and comes with peppercorn sauce on the side.

If we could have fit dessert in, the sticky toffee pudding would have been our choice, but we are happy to leave on a high having enjoyed a quality meal in a pleasant and welcoming environment.

The bottom line A superb venue for having a filling meal and watching live sport.
