The new games you need to get for your new console

Regardless of your choice, you’ll still be able to enjoy these next-generation friendly titles

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

The next in the incredibly popular Assassin’s Creed series is a sprawling Viking adventure. You play as a Viking chief who has just landed in 850AD England, and must set up a successful colony. Along the way, you’ll employ the series’ trademark stealthy gameplay, partake in big set-piece battles and uncover the next chapter in the Assassin’s Creed storyline. The game has been in development for a few years, and will make the most of both new consoles’ extra graphical grunt. Valhalla is supposedly bigger than any previous game in the franchise, as well as by far the best looking. And as with any Assassin’s Creed game, expect to spend more than a few hours in this next-generation Viking simulator.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
At last count, Call of Duty was one of the most successful gaming franchises of all time (slightly behind Super Mario) and any new game in the series comes with an incredible amount of fanfare. The most recent game is no different, and features an all-new campaign that continues the Black Ops covert agent storyline. As the name suggests, this one involves a global conspiracy, nuclear weapons and the Russians. Flashy Hollywood-style single player aside, the game will also include trademark Zombie multiplayer mode, and the game will also tie-in to Call of Duty’s Battle Royal Warzone.

Fortnite

Fortnite
It was inevitable that the world’s biggest game would arrive on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but not many people expected such big improvements. The Battle Royale game will continue to be free on next-generation consoles, but benefit from a huge 4K graphical boost. That means the island environment will look better than ever, and the environment will have dynamic visuals and physics, such as grass and trees that realistically respond to explosions. The game will also support 60 frames per second, which should improve your aim almost immediately, and any next-gen player who installs the game will immediately receive a free pickaxe.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion
This marks the third outing in the anarchic, tech-savvy series however this one takes place in open world London. And what an open world it is, with Watch Dogs using every single bit of processing power of these next-gen consoles to make every red phone box, double-decker bus and fish and chip stall render as if it were real. Once again, you play as a member of a hacker group rising against the government to free the people, using all manner of sneaky technology tricks to do it. This time around, you can recruit just about any character in the game to your activist group – instantly making them playable.
