Discover the UAE’s history on the East coast

Stay…
Budget
The Breeze Motel:
Down the road in Kalba you’ll find The Breeze Motel. Although it is basic, it might warm the hearts of any ‘70s kitsch fans and there’s a pool, barbecue area and children’s playground.

Luxury
Hilton Fujairah:
With a laid-back Spanish vibe, the Hilton is at the heart of Fujairah’s nightlife. It also offers watersports on the private beach and historical tours of the nearby towns.

Sadaf:
Handy Iranian chain that serves up huge portions of traditional Persian food, such as grilled meat platters and kebabs. It’s on the opposite side of the fish roundabout to the Hilton Fujairah hotel
.
Expensive
Al Meshwar:
You can’t miss this place behind KFC on Hamad Bin Abdullah Road thanks to its fake stone facade. Inside there’s a grotto and a waterfall! Want more? Try the traditional Lebanese fare.

Must see…
Bull butting. No, we’re not kidding. It takes place on a Friday on the corniche in Fujairah, just after the coffee pot roundabout next to Cafe Maria. Spectactors gather to watch two bulls lock horns, while around 20 men sit and judge the winner. Downright unforgettable!

Must do…
Go kayaking through the nearby Khor Kalba mangroves, one of the world’s oldest such forests and get back to nature. Desert Rangers are the only company allowed to take visitors through the protected area, where you might see rare, white-collared kingfishers.

Getting there
Take Emirates Road to Sharjah and after National Paints take the exit to the East, this is Al Dhaid road. Follow that to Masafi, and then onto Fujairah.

Time Out recommends
Stop at Masafi on your way to Fujairah if it’s a Friday and check out the local market – they do a mean line in carpets, so try out your haggling skills.
