How kids can maintain their fitness levels for swimming without access to a pool

Six ways to keep your little athlete in tip top condition without getting wet

With the kids on holiday and schools across the UAE getting ready to embark on a home learning programme, Nebojsa Durkin, head coach at My Sports Swimming Academy, shares his advice on how the kids can stay active and maintain their fitness levels at home.

  • Be a sponge, absorb as much as you can. Use the time to enhance your swimming knowledge by reading technique-based articles and books, plus watch videos, on YouTube.
  • Make a home training schedule. Good planning keeps you in good routine for the future. You should change the activities you focus on each day focusing on core athletic skills such as running, jumping, climbing, throwing, catching, pushing and pulling. The more muscle groups you activate, the better shape you will stay in.

*Eat healthy, freshly-prepared home meals. The more food looks like it’s natural state, the fewer processes it has been through, and the better it is for you.

*Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. It’s hugely important to eat your five a day.

  • Limit your intake of processed junk food.
  • Stay hydrated, particularly in a warm climate, is so important. Wherever you go make sure you drink plenty of water and carry a refillable bottle with you so you can keep topped up.
