5 to try: Abu Dhabi sports bars

Don’t have a ticket, eh? here’s where else you can watch the footie in the city

Heroes: A popular expat haunt, this basement bar is usually the site of football-loving geezers wielding scarves in victory, so it should make a more-than appropriate spot to take in the Cup. The food’s not bad either.
Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi (02 621 0000)

Hemingway’s:
A likeable bar with sports nights and many TVs to catch up on the latest cup action. It does a mean burger, too.
Hilton Abu Dhabi Hotel, Corniche (02 681 1900)

NRG: Passing the huge F1 car on your right as you enter tells you this is a place for sports enthusiasts. Naturally, it’s about as perky a sports bar as you’ll find in the capital. Four big screen TVs ensure plenty of viewing room, but it’s usually pretty packed, so get there early.
Le Méridien, Tourist Club Area (02 644 6666)

The Village Club: The Village Club is going to be open for all of the games, projecting the action onto the side of the hotel. It’s basically a football cinema, plus there will be the usual full buffet and a choice of shishas available.

PJ O’ Reilly’s: Hugely popular, PJs is invariably heaving. Downstairs, the giant-screen TV catches the eye, with a second one upstairs for those who don’t want to join the throng. The pub food is among the best, too.
