The team
One of the most consistent sides in international football, Germany have lifted the FIFA World Cup three times, reached the final seven times and, on the occasions they haven’t made it that far, you can bet they came pretty close. Their qualifying campaign proved that the team is as efficient as ever, finishing top of their group. Although they’re sure to be in the running again in 2010, it won’t be easy, especially now golden boy and team captain Michael Ballack’s out with an ankle injury.
The coach
Joachim Low
Cool under pressure and a tactical maestro, Low took over in 2006 after the last World Cup and, although his leadership has yet to deliver a trophy, the players still play with the same clinical efficiency
as before.
Player to watch
Bastian Schweinsteiger
A lot of fans’ eyes will be on Bastian Schweinsteiger now Ballack’s out. With 73 caps, he has proven particularly dangerous around the penalty box thanks to his pin-point crosses. He’s also managed to net 19 goals himself.
