Al Forsan sports resort

What’s on offer at the all-new Al Forsan sports resort

The opening of International Sports Resort Al Forsan is one of the most exciting pieces of sports news we’ve had in the capital in ages. Not just because the facilities are absolutely state-of-the-art and innovative, but also because it’s so inclusive. Almost every aspect of the resort has something for beginners and kids, as well as professionals or experienced sporting types, and soon there will even be a selection of restaurants open for those who just want to relax. The owners claim Al Forsan is the only resort in the world to combine such diverse facilities, and, according to managing director Mr Atif Mageb, it will cater for international sporting events, as well as being a base for the community to improve their lifestyle. He says: ‘Young people can come here and spend their energy on something that’s useful for Abu Dhabi’s society. Basically, if you invest your money in a membership, you’ll be able to look at yourself in three years’ time and be a different person.’

For water sports fans
Those who like extreme sports of the wet kind will be left salivating over the news of purpose-built freshwater lakes complete with overhead cables, for wakeboarding, waterskiing, knee-boarding and wake-skating – which is similar to wakeboarding except with a much smaller board. The cable system, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East, allows more than one person to practise at the same time, and the speed to be adjusted according to experience. There’s a pro lake for practising tricks and high-speed manoeuvres but you don’t need to be put off if you’re a novice on the waves, as the Easy Start lake will give beginners a chance to learn at their own pace and develop solid techniques.

For the horsey types
This equestrian centre has been carefully designed to cater to anyone with dreams of becoming a champion jockey. For seasoned riders, there’s a full-sized polo field, dressage and show-jumping facilities, while beginners can learn about the art of horse riding at the equestrian education centre. There are even smaller ponies for the littl’uns to trot around on, under the watchful eye of expert instructors.

For the petrol heads
If high-velocity pursuits are your bag, rev your engines and get involved in the sports centre’s karting facilities. The advanced fleet of karts at Al Forsan’s circuit can reach a staggering 110kph, although you’ll have to undergo training sessions before you’re let loose in these high-powered beasts. Less speedy machines where you’re allowed behind the wheel straight away are also available. We say less speedy, but these vehicles can still hit 90kph. But if you’re feeling anxious about letting your offspring loose on this track, fear not. There is also a child-friendly karting track, with low-powered vehicles designed for seven-11 year olds. On top of the karting circuit, there is also a 2km off-road circuit – known as the Race of Champions – designed to turn you into a dune-bashing master in no time.

For the trigger happy
Tune up your marksman skills at Al Forsan’s indoor and outdoor shooting ranges. The alfresco facilities include air-conditioned pavilions for letting off a few rounds in, as well as a 10-lane archery range. Indoors, you can blast some targets away with either pistols or rifles, or, if you’re a bit wary of firearms, you can opt for the laser shooting simulator instead.

For warmongers
Three themed zones will set the scene for your paintball battle. The Wild West area has interactive buildings such as a saloon, jail and bank to make you feel as though you’re starring in a John Wayne cowboy flick. Meanwhile, the Pacific Island Zone has light, smoke and sound effects making it feel as though you’re embroiled in a desperate battle for survival during World War II. Sci-fi nuts can also opt for the Alien Encounter Zone, which is filled with eerie, out-of-this-world props and moon craters to hide in.
