Kids in the UAE can watch a family-friendly Christmas show virtually

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is being shown on Zoom

If watching a top show from the comfort of your sofa, and potentially in your PJs – we aren’t judging, promise – sounds like a winner, then this virtual performance of children’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, might be right up your street.

It’s the much-loved story, but with a new soundtrack and some new songs, and it’s coming to your screens just in time for Christmas.

Dial in on Zoom to watch Dorothy and her little dog Toto, along with her friends Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion, follow the yellow brick road to find the magical wizard.

There are various show times to choose from between December 19 and January 3.

Each performance is performed in ‘real time’ live with all actors working remotely and there will be fantastical costumes and visually stunning backdrops that promise to keep the little ones glued to the screen.

To try and recreate the feeling of being in a theatre auditorium, there will be an interactive element (but not in a way that makes anyone feel uncomfortable) to the play and the audience will be able to interact with the actors and also with each other at various points in the show.

Tickets for one device to access the link to the show cost around Dhs145 and the show producers advice you tune in on a large screen like a TV rather than on a table or smartphone to see the play, which is performed in real time, in its full glory.

Gari Jones, who has adapted and is directing the performance says: “This show will be playful, silly, surreal and anarchic but alongside it there’s a tale with a heart that has a beauty and fragility.”

He adds: “It’s also really poignant right now, especially when audiences may be feeling a sense of loss and isolation, so we wanted to try to recreate that sense of being able to hang out with your family and friends and experience a unique and fun night of surprises and liveliness.”

The show’s running time is 110 mins including a 20-minute interval.
