Second UAE swine flu death confirmed

Illness takes lives in UAE and Bahrain

The Health Ministry on Sunday confirmed the swine flu epidemic has claimed its second victim in the UAE.

The ministry said the victim was a 30-year-old pregnant Pakistani female. The woman was operated on and gave birth to a healthy child.

Meanwhile, Bahrain on Sunday reported its first swine flu death – the victim there described as in her 30s and from South East Asia, KUNA reported.

Health department official, Mohammed Ameen Awadhi, speaking from the country’s Salmaniya Medical Complex, said the woman had recently visited the accident and emergency department, complaining of symptoms including fever, sore throat and headache. She was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit.

It emerged that the woman had underlying health issues, although it was not determined whether she contracted the virus abroad or in Bahrain.

Bahrain has reported 200 swine flu infections so far, with most patients having fully recovered. ”A few people” are described as still receiving medical treatment.
