Police officials in Abu Dhabi have issued a warning after a rise in attempted online fraud involving local bank accounts.

The Criminal Investigation Department of Abu Dhabi Police said it has received reports of fraudsters targeting bank accounts with genuine looking emails asking for sensitive information.

Colonel Rashid Bu Rasheed, the head of the department, said in comments published by news agency WAM that the bogus emails asked recipients to fill in application forms with information, such as like login username and passwords, PIN numbers, and account numbers.

The majority of scammers caught by Abu Dhabi Police were from Africa, Colonel Bu Rasheed said.
