ID cards deadline

All UAE residents must have an identity card by the end of 2010…

All residents in the UAE must get an identity car by the end of the year, a top official has said.

Major General Nasser Al Menhali, assistant director-general of naturalisation and residency, said there will be no further grace period after this time.

He urged people who do not have the card already to use this time to apply for the card, WAM news agency reported.

Earlier this month officials said registration for the mandatory cards will be cut from a whole day to five minutes with the introduction of a series of new registration centres.

These new centres will be able to process 20,000 applicants per day – almost tripling the current level.

Al Menhali said ID cards will be used to streamline and speed up all the ministry’s services, including the issuance of passports, licences for private security companies and firearms, as well as certificates of compliance with civil defence security and safety requirements.
