Residents of Dubai’s International City fear their health is in danger after parts of the Nakheel-built development were flooded with raw sewage.
According to a report in the National on Monday, a huge pool of sewage and formed over car parks and streets over the past few days leaving residents stranded in their homes and businesses out of pocket.
Nakheel told the paper the problem was caused by a broken sewage pipe that has now been fixed.
“A situation related to the sewage system at International City has now been resolved,” an unnamed official told the paper via e-mail. “The damaged pipeline is now repaired and the sewage pumping station resumed pumping to the sewage treatment plant.”
The development was flooded with sewage for two weeks in July 2008, according to local media reports at the time.
Residents told the National regular flooding was caused by the development’s inadequate drainage system.
“This is always happening,” Abdullah Mohammed, manager of the transport company DHI, told the paper. “Even inside our office, sometimes we see that the pipes are blocked.”
