Capital to host Brazilian football match

South Americans will take on Iran in friendly game

Since the arrival of the FIFA Club World Cup, we’ve become used to seeing the best club teams on the planet do battle on Abu Dhabi’s pitches. But if it’s some quality international soccer action you’re after, then you’ll be in a carnival mood when you hear that legendary Brazil team will playing in the capital on October 7.

The five times World Cup champions will be playing a friendly against Iran at Zayed Sports City, and although cynics would immediately expect Brazil to send a reserve team to the UAE, according to the Iranian newspaper, Tehran Times, the South Americans will be sending a full-strength squad.

This could mean a host of players so talented that they only need one name: AC Milan striker Robinho, Barcelona defender Adriano and Chelsea midfielder Ramires – all of them could well take to the pitch (or at the very least be sat on the bench).

The game is part of Iran’s warm-up for the Asian Cup in Qatar in January. It’s also a signal of the cordial political relationship between the two countries, close allies despite other nations’ sanctions against Iran over its nuclear power programme.

Prices, times and locations have yet to be officially announced. Check timeoutabudhabi.com over the coming days for further information.
