Last week, residents of Abu Dhabi discovered the perils of washing their cars in front of homes. A two day campaign hosted by The Municipality of Abu Dhabi delivered the message that this practice is to stop. Not only does it cause serious water wastage but it also affects the look of the city. Khalifa Al Rumaithi, director of public health at the Municipality of Abu Dhabi said: ‘It causes waterlogged streets which in turn can trigger subsidence of the asphalt pavement as a result of the accumulated water and in addition creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes and insects.’ Fines of Dhs500 will be issued to persistent offenders.
