Daft Punk and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were among the big winners at the 56th Grammy Awards, taking home four awards apiece.
Turning up at Sunday’s (January 26) event in robot costumes, the French electronic duo picked up a total of four awards for Random Access Memories and its breakout hit ‘Get Lucky’, including the coveted record of the year award. Guest vocalist Pharrell Williams – who also won best producer – was left to tackle the acceptance speech (we guess robots can’t talk).
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis matched this with a win for best new artist, as well as three awards in the rap field.
The other big success was 17-year-old New Zealander Lorde’s one-two win for song of the year and pop vocal performance, but super-hit ‘Royals’. Bruno Mars meanwhile cleaned up with an award for best pop album.
Rock fans will be confounded by the state of modern guitar music, with a 2007 concert recording of a reformed Led Zeppelin somehow named best rock album, beating fellow aging rock royalty Neil Young (who at least had some fresh tunes on his sprawling, double disc Psychedelic Pill).
Another vintage rocker to receive late respect was Paul McCartney, who won two awards including best rock song for his collaboration ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ with Nirvana leftovers Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear and Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters man also received a second award for the soundtrack to his documentary Sound City: Real to Reel, about LA’s Sound City Studios.
