Wales win Rugby

80-1 outsiders triumph in Dubai-based rugby tournament

Wales created history on Saturday as they won the Rugby Sevens World Cup with a 19-12 victory over Argentina in Dubai.

The 80-1 outsiders – ranked 11th in the world – had earlier knocked out sevens heavyweights New Zealand and Samoa to reach their first ever final on a day of major shocks in Dubai that saw the four top seeds all crash out.

Wales, who lost to Argentina in the pool stages, opened a 12-7 half-time lead with tries from Richie Pugh and Tal Selley before the Pumas drew level. But Aled Thomas sealed a Welsh win with the decisive try.

The win in Dubai comes just four years after Wales returned to the full International Rugby Board sevens fold and marks the first time the Welsh had progressed beyond the semi-final stage.
