Abu Dhabi to play cricket host

Cricket boss in talks to bring international matches to UAE

Abu Dhabi Cricket Association boss Dilwar Mani is planning further talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board to see that more games are held in the UAE capital.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are already due to host Pakistan’s limited overs games against Australia next month, and New Zealand could go there later this year.

The venues could also be extend to England, who are scheduled to play four Tests and five one-day matches in Pakistan in 2010.

England are due to tour Pakistan in February and March next year, but in the wake of the attacks in Lahore it appears unthinkable that those matches will go ahead there, while Abu Dhabi and Dubai are seen as more neutral venues.

“The decision must be made between the two cricket boards,” Mani said.

Mani said he had not yet been approached about staging some of England’s matches but told me Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed stadium would be ‘delighted’ to step in as host.

”Should any country require our assistance and facilities we can make them available,” said the chief executive.

Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed stadium is already well known to cricketers.

England trained there in December before their Test series in India and domestic teams regularly use it for pre-season preparation, with six counties due to arrive in Abu Dhabi later this month.

Mani says he has ‘no doubt’ the stadium, which has traditionally been used for limited-overs matches would be suitable for staging a Test match.
