Abu Dhabi-backed Free Solo wins big at the Emmys

Another haul of awards for the documentary

Free Solo, the documentary co-produced by Abu Dhabi’s Image Nation and National Geographic, has won even more accolades at the Emmys.

The film that follows free-climber Alex Honnold as he prepares to climb the 1km-high vertical El Capitan rock in Yosemite National Park, won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar back in February.

At the Emmy Awards, held in Los Angeles, the film picked up a total of seven awards including Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Programme, Outstanding Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing, Music Composition and Best Achievement in Interactive Media.

Free Solo won every single award that it was nominated for at the ceremony adding to its previous wins at the Academy Awards and the BAFTAS.

The stunning documentary was made by filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin.

Free Solo also enjoys a 98 percent positing rating on Rotten Tomatoes, proving a hit with the viewing public as well.

While no longer being shown in cinemas, the films grossed an impressive $22m (Dhs73.4m) at the box office
