Preview: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

It’s end of Star Wars (as we know it)

It’s the end of an era for the Star Wars universe, but there’s still time to enjoy one last wild ride. The latest Star Wars film is the finale in the third trilogy (which has become known as The Skywalker Saga). After this, the franchise is set to jump into lightspeed towards galaxies yet to be discovered.

We’ve already had some spin-off movies (Rogue One proved an enjoyable sidestep, Solo less so) and the Disney+ streaming service is showing The Mandalorian to acclaim now.

Back to the original thread, though, and this is the last part of the story going back to  1977 when the first Star Wars film (Episode IV: A New Hope) burst on to the scene to change sci-fi forever.

This film, set one year after the events of 2017’s The Last Jedi, reunites us with our friends Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as they lead the Resistance to see off the threat of The First Order and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

We also know that Carrie Fisher, who passed away before the release of the last film, will make an appearance, thanks to some existing footage. It wouldn’t be the same without Princess Leia alongside C3P0, R2D2 and everyone’s favourite walking carpet and co-pilot Chewbacca.

In this trilogy we’ve lost (spoiler alert) Luke and Han Solo, so we’re bracing ourselves for another big shock.

J.J Abrams is back at the helm for this one, taking over from Rian Johnson who received some scathing responses to The Last Jedi, in particular about the film’s treatment of Luke Skywalker.

It will be interesting to see how he appeases the angry fans.

This will be huge and we’re expecting a lot of noise – positive and negative.

The force is still strong and it will be intriguing to see what comes next.
