5 movies to see in UAE cinemas this weekend

New films include a Marvel film starring Tom Hardy and a surreal film with Anya Taylor Joy

It’s finally the weekend, and that means UAE cinemas have a whack of new movies for us to watch. This week we have everything from a complex new Marvel character to Anya Taylor Joy starring in a surreal film, to brand new horror.

What are you waiting for? Grab a bucket of buttery popcorn and a giant slushie (or whatever your movie snack of choice is) and dive into these new films.

Antlers

What is it about a small North American town that can frighten us so much? Whatever it is, it’s working on us with this latest film: Antlers. Produced by Guillermo Del Toro (the creator of Pan’s Labyrinth) the film is set in an isolated Oregon town where a middle-school teacher and her brother, the sheriff, become embroiled with her enigmatic student whose secrets lead to terrifying encounters with a creature who came before them. We’re covering our eyes.

Dune

If you haven’t seen Dune yet, you should absolutely see it this weekend. The film follows a gifted man destined for greatness on a planet that is far from perfect. Oh, and giant sandworms go about snacking on the cast, so be ready for a bit of everything. It has historically failed to sparkle on the silver screen, but director Denis Villeneuve looks to have hit the mark at last. A monster you can’t avoid any longer.

James Bond: No Time to Die

Okay, so we’ve been spouting about how good the latest James Bond flick is for ages now, but in case you missed the memo we thought we’d do so again. Having thought he’d found the quiet life, 007 (Daniel Craig) is yanked back into the fold to bring down a mysterious villain (Rami Malek) who possess a dangerous piece of technology that could bring the world to ruin. It’s had rave reviews, and if you haven’t seen it yet you’re seriously missing out.

Last Night in Soho

We’ve been obsessed with Anya Taylor Joy since she starred in the Netflix hit series, The Queen’s Gambit, and have been watching out for her on the silver screen ever since. Ready for a surreal flick? Last Night in Soho follows a young fashion students named Eloise, played by Thomasin McKenzie, who is obsessed with all things ‘60s. Habouring a “sixth sense” she moves to London and forms a strange connection across time with Sandie, played by Anya Taylor Joy – a dazzling young woman who dreams of becoming a star. Bring on the surrealism.

Venom

Love Marvel movies? Us too. Lately it seems like they’ve been cropping up faster than we can get to the cinemas to see them (we’re still reeling from Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Black Widow). But we’ll definitely be making time this weekend to see Venom, which released to UAE cinemas on Thursday October 14. The film stars Tom Hardy as one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters. It was directed by Andy Serkis, and stars Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson, in the role of the villain Cletus Kasady aka Carnage. We’re ready.
