6 new movies to watch this weekend

Jammin’ sports, electrifying action, and rooms you can’t escape…

Who doesn’t love the movies? Just thinking about the snacks alone has us ready to head to the nearest theatre. Buttery popcorn, mountains of candy, nachos, pizza … and then there’s the films themselves, of course.

What better way to kick off the weekend than with a whack of new films to watch? This week there’s action, comedy and thrillers to choose from and with NBA champions gracing the big screen we’re thinking these films will be a slam dunk.

Escape Room: No Way Out

You might’ve tried an escape room in Dubai but did you know there is also an Escape Room film franchise? Escape Room: No Way Out is the sequel to the box office hit and psychological thriller that terrified audiences around the world. (It’s good to see we’re not the only ones with claustrophobia). In this installment, six people unwittingly find themselves locked in a series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive… and realizing some of them have played the game before. Locked in a room with five strangers? We’re scared already. This film releases Thursday July 15 and is rated PG13.

Gunpowder Milkshake

We’re not going to lie, the title of this film sounds like a Dubai food trend; would it be good or would it be gross? Someone figure out how to make one and we’ll give it a review. In this action-packed thriller, 12-year-old Sam is abandoned by her mother Scarlet, an elite assassain, and is left to be raised by The Firm, a ruthless crime syndicate. 15 years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a fierce hit-woman using her talents to clean up The Firm’s most dangerous messes. But when a high-risk job goes wrong, Sam has to choose between serving The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent eight year old girl. The film releases Thursday July 15 and is rated 15 plus.

Jolt

Have you ever been so angry you – erm – zapped yourself with an electrical device? In this dark comedy directed by Tanya Wexler, a woman with severe anger issues uses a special electrode device to zap herself whenever she feels the urge to get violent. But when someone close to her is murdered she goes on a rampage, determined to bring the culprits to justice. If you’re looking for a movie that mixes humour with violence, this sounds like it could be the one for you. The film is rated 15 plus, and comes out Thursday July 15.

Out of Death

Are you looking for an old-fashioned thriller that takes place in the woods? Retired cop, Jack Harris (Bruce Willis) is finding solace in the remote wilderness when his tranquility gets hijacked by a lone hiker, Shannon (Jaime King). She’s on the run from dirty cops and needs his help to survive. Determined to help her at any cost, Jack and Shannon need to use their instincts to survive the wilderness and the human predators in it. The film was directed by Mike Burns and written by Bill Lawrence and comes out on Thursday July 15. The film is rated 15 plus.

Riders of Justice

A train crash kills a woman moments after her fellow passenger, Otto, gives his seat up to her on the train. The woman’s husband, Markus, is set on a revenge plot when Otto tells him about his theory that the train crash wasn’t an accident, but a premeditated attack. This film promises to be a new take on the revenge narrative, exploring themes of grief, revenge, causality. It was directed by Anders Thomas Jensen and stars Mads Mikkelson, Andrea Heick Gadeberg, and Nikolaj Lie Kaas. It’s rated 15 plus and releases on Thursday July 15.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Last but not least, this hotly-anticipated film welcomes a new generation to the jam – Space Jam. NBA champion and global icon, LeBron James goes on an epic adventure with Bugs Bunny and company. When LeBron and his son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue AI, LeBron has to get them safely home with the help of Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, and the Looney Tunes to victory over the AI’s champions of the basketball court. It’s a Tunes versus Goons that redefines LeBron’s relationship with his son. Kids and fans of the 1996 original definitely shouldn’t miss this family-friendly film, which is rated PG and comes out Thursday July 15.
