Meander

Warning: if you’re claustrophobic, this is not – we repeat not – the movie for you. Meander, which is rated 18 plus and hits UAE cinemas on Thursday August 19, follows a woman who gets locked in a series of bizarre tubes filled with dangerous traps. Horror and sci-fi fans, this is the movie for you.

Paw Patrol: The Movie

Looking to win some mega brownie points, mums and dads? Treat the kiddies to an afternoon at the flicks with Paw Patrol: The Movie. When their biggest rival, Humdinger, becomes Mayor of nearby Adventure City and starts wreaking havoc, Ryder and everyone’s favourite heroic pups kick into high gear to face the challenge head on. Recognisable voices include Dax Shepard, Jimmy Kimmel, Kim Kardashian, and Tyler Perry – to name a few. Paw Patrol: The Movie is hitting UAE cinemas on Thursday August 19.

Reminiscence

Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy makes her big-screen directorial debut by chucking Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, and Thandiwe Newton into a trippy sci-fi puzzle box about a man who plugs himself into some sort of Phillip K. Dickian memory machine to search for his lost love. As expected from Joy, the film looks gorgeously discombobulating and knotted up with twists. The movie is out on Thursday August 19 and is rated PG15.

Respect

It doesn’t matter that Respect seems cut from a familiar biopic pattern. Also out in UAE cinemas on Thursday August 19, this is a film in which Dreamgirls Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson plays the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. That should be enough to put this sure-fire awards candidate on the must-see list of any music lover. And the gorgeous period costumes and set design are just added bonuses.

Stillwater

Matt Damon is back in Europe causing a ruckus – and this time as an American dad, Bill, trying to exonerate his estranged daughter for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. Also starring Camille Cottin and Abigail Breslin, writer-director Tom McCarthy injects the meditative quality that elevated his journo procedural Spotlight into this sometimes thrilling family drama. Stillwater is out on Thursday August 19 and is rated 15 plus – you can check out the full review here.

The Green Knight

If you’re looking for an epic fantasy adventure based on a timeless Arthurian legend, you’ve come to the right place. Starring Alicia Vikander, Dev Patel and Joel Edgerton, The Green Knight tells the tale of King Arthur’s nephew, Sir Gawain (played by Patel), who ventures on a quest to confront the Green Knight – a humongous emerald-skinned stranger – and tester of men. The film hits UAE cinemas on Thursday August 19.
