Natalie B

DJ Natalie Brogan, aka Natalie B, is one of the hottest female house DJs to rise to recent clubbing fame. Taking up residency at Abu Dhabi’s latest five-star hotel is just the icing on the cake, as Claire Carruthers discovered

Tell us about yourself…
I’m 24 from Manchester, England. I carried out a 10-week DJ’ing course at Manchester Midi School back in 2006 just as a hobby. I actually started DJ’ing when I was 16, playing at house parties, but not actually mixing like I do now. I was working as a beauty therapist for Chanel until May 2009, but gave it up to try a season in Ibiza, where I stayed for three months, playing in most bars in San Antonio, clubs such as Boho, Eden and Es Paradis, and I was also resident for the brand Pukka Up, which lead me to where I am now – DJ’ing in the UAE.

What kind of music makes your set list?
I play soulful house, deep funky tech and a little electro.

What are your musical influences?
Well, actually my dad! He isn’t a DJ, but I grew up listening to the music he played, such as Massive Attack and Bowie – he definitely influenced me a lot.

Favourite DJ?
Erick Morillo for his technical ability and as a crowd pleaser. And although he doesn’t play my type of music, I think Eddie Halliwell is immense behind the decks.

Favourite label?
Way too many! HedKandi, Defected, Toolroom and Stealth are my top ones, though.

You’ve recently taken up residency at Chameleon Bar, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr – how’s that going?
The bar isn’t even a month old yet – it’s still all word-of-mouth and hotel guests, but it’s going really well and we have many regulars already. The official big launch is February 3 – the night will hopefully make more people aware that we are here and that Chameleon is definitely the one place in Abu Dhabi to be seen!

What have you got lined up for the summer season?
I’m still in two minds (or rather three) at the moment. I’ve been offered an extension on my contract here until August, work in Ibiza over the summer, and I’m also thinking about concentrating more on gigs back home in the UK as I wasn’t there much last year – I have many options, so watch this space.

Your hot track right now…
Even though it’s classed as being a little old now for DJ’s, I still can’t get enough of Dennis Ferrer’s ‘Hey Hey.’

Last but not least, what are your thoughts on Abu Dhabi nightlife/club scene?
I think people here are open to hearing new music, which is excellent, and they always seem to be excited about new nights/events that are happening. When you have some of the world’s biggest clubbing brands such as Space, HedKandi and Defected all in one city, you don’t get much better than that.

Natalie B is resident DJ of Chameleon Bar, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr (02 654 3333). Official launch night, February 3, open daily 7pm-3am.
