Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am from Cape Town, South Africa – without a doubt, the most beautiful city in the world. I have been performing in the UAE for the past seven years: four years in Abu Dhabi and three years in Dubai.

Have you always loved jazz music?
I was singing from eight years old in our family church. I was exposed to jazz as a child. Artists such as Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and George Benson could be heard around the house. I enjoy jazz, but I enjoy all genres of music.

How long have you been doing it?
I’ve been working professionally as a vocalist since 2002, working at a range of private and public gigs.

Who are your favourite singers and musicians, and how have they influenced your style?
My favourite jazz singers are Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, George Benson (my favourite all-time jazz song is George Benson’s ‘Lady Love Me’) and Michael Buble. However, the person who has influenced me the most is Brian McKnight. He has an amazing ability to sing in all genres and his range is unique. Listening to these artists inspires me to experiment with my own vocal ability. Their music motivates me and inspires me to always give my best to the audience.

As someone who doesn’t listen to a lot of jazz, can you explain the appeal?
Jazz music is very exciting because I find it is the only genre of music that has unpredictable melodies. The range of instruments has the listener always wanting more.

How long have you been part of U-Turn band?
I have been performing with U-Turn for the last five and a half months at the Jazz Bar, Hilton Abu Dhabi. I am a solo artist and am not part of any specific band but enjoy the challenge of playing with a range of musicians.

Do you also play any instruments?
Yes, I play the acoustic guitar. I can also play the bass guitar and can manage to keep a beat on the drums.

For people who have never seen you perform before, what can they expect from gig at the Hilton?
You can expect a night of dancing, singing and overall fun. We cover a range of music to meet everybody’s musical preferences – from jazz, reggae, pop, rock, R’n’B, hip-hop and soul. We also do requests. You can expect to have a fantastic night.

Plans for the future?
My plan for the future is to become a well-known solo recording artist. I have successfully released two original tracks and three covers on a compilation album in South Africa. You can check me out on You Tube.
