First, if you’re over the age of 20 you shouldn’t be reading about Twilight merchandise, so just go and buy any of the new tracks you don’t already possess (namely Muse’s ‘Neutron Star Collision’, Florence’s ‘Heavy in Your Arms’ and the Bat For Lashes/Beck team-up, ‘Let’s Get Lost’). If you’re under 20, you’ll know (and love) that Twilight is the story of a somewhat dull, average girl who has her life transformed by the constant – and actually quite oppressive – attentions of a controlling figure with a dark secret. It’s somehow okay that he’s an idiot, though, because he’s a sparkly vampire.
Twilight is fantasy fuel, a universe that exists only to give emos common ground on which to hold a picnic of their romantic daydreams. Somehow, grown-up bands such as The Black Keys and Vampire Weekend (of course) are now lining up to get on the soundtrack and into the purchasing memories of the film’s credulous fanbase. In this sense, this album is a perfect accompaniment of gothic aurotica, its dramatic undertow boarded up with a glittery, saleable façade.
