Joan As Police Woman

Sultry speakeasy vocal somewhere between Feist and Norah Jones

The Deep Field
3/5

Connecticut’s Joan Wasser begins her third album with ‘Nervous’, a fuzzed-up tune with a girlish swagger that sounds quite the opposite of its title. Over the course of her career, the 40-year-old’s talent has attracted the likes of Antony and the Johnsons, Lou Reed and Rufus Wainwright, to name a few, and it’s easy to see why. Her songs are filled with the sort of louche organ grooves Broken Bells would appreciate and, on her more stripped songs, a sultry speakeasy vocal somewhere between Feist and – yes, really – Norah Jones.
