Sonic Youth

New York rockers return with new album

NYC’s art-rock skronkers wrote and performed these 13 tracks, inspired by French film director Fabrice Gobert’s thriller about three students who go missing from school. The test of any soundtrack is how much sense – and emotional impact – it makes standing alone. No problems here on that (ahem) score. Rather than record to order, Sonic Youth shaped the results to suit the movie’s scenes afterwards. The results run the mood gamut: enigmatic and explicit; delicate and dramatic; broodily introspective and eruptively expansive. Piano and fizzing electronica offset the guitar anti-style that is so inimitably The Yoot.
