Ledisi

Something akin to the sensuality of Angie Stone and the self-empowerment of Jill Scott

Pieces of Me
2/5

‘People just don’t know what I’m about,’ Ledisi sings in the title track of her watery new studio disc. And whose fault is that? This Oakland R&B singer has built up plenty of music-industry heat over the past few years. Yet she has trouble putting across any concentrated artistic sensibility; here, in songs co-written and produced by Salaam Remi and John Legend (among others), she seems stranded between Angie Stone’s sensuality and the self-empowerment of Jill Scott. An intermediate state may be exactly what Ledisi is about, but Pieces doesn’t convince you of that.
