Spank Rock

He is no longer the future of electro but this is still good music to party to

Everything Is Boring and Everyone is a F***ing Liar
3/5

Rather than warning of explicit lyrics, the sticker on Spank Rock’s second album should advise his fans against expecting Yoyoyoyoyo part two. Really, there’s no reason why they should. Dude dropped said rude, electro/booty-rap debut in 2006 and, if his horizon hadn’t shifted in five years, his rep as a maverick would need revising. But for many hip hop artists, rock and pop are (relatively) novel, so what feels to them like striking out into clear water can seem to others like a diluting of their USP.

Everything… isn’t exactly packed with radical contradictions, but it will still put a few noses out of joint. Not least of all for its polished production (most of it by Boys Noize) and high-profile guests such as Santigold. But mostly for peddling the kind of poppy future-bass now pumping out of most dive-bars in Dalston. But it’s hard to knock the chip-tune take on Prince that is ‘Baby’, the Numanoid-Peaches stylings of ‘Hot Potato’ and the murky urgency of ‘Dtf Dadt’. He may no longer be the future of electro, but Spank still makes great music to slug a cold brew to. Sometimes, that’s enough.
