Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power)’s transformation from troubled and chronically shy, leftfield pop pin-up will disappoint some. But she owes those hooked on the myth of the tortured artist nothing and, six years after her last set of originals, has decided to let the sun shine in. ‘Silent Machine’, for example, is a startling take on her beloved grubby blues – lustrous, energised and full of hope. The sun suits her well.
