Sarah Geronimo in the UAE

Platinum-selling Filipino superstar on fame, fans and music

The platinum-selling Filipino singer, who shot to fame over a decade ago after winning Star for a Night, talks to Rodelito Mamuad following her latest UAE gig.

This isn’t your first performance in the UAE, what are you excited to see while you’re here this time?
No, I’ve been here to the UAE a few times, but this was my first solo concert in Abu Dhabi and it was so exciting. The UAE continues to impress the entire world as it has grown so fast. I would definitely like to see Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, The Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa if I get time. Exciting.

You’re a successful actor as well as a singer – which excites you the most?
Singing is really my passion and my life – it’s as a result of my singing that I’m where I am now. I entered acting just to see what else I could do and I thank my fans for their positive response to the films I’ve worked on. I never expected it!

You’ve collaborated with international artists like Backstreet Boys and Howie Dorough, who else would you really like to work with?
I would have loved to have collaborated with the late legendary Michael Jackson. He has been my inspiration since I was a child and I always dreamt of becoming a huge star like him.

You’re nominated in three categories in this year’s World Music Awards (WMA) competing with big singers like Adele, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and others, are you expecting to win?
No, I am not expecting to win, but the fact that I have been nominated is already a big achievement so I consider myself to be a winner in that respect. I don’t know who will win though – they’re all really good.

If you’ve never been spotted and found fame as a singer, what do you think you would be doing now?
Honestly, I don’t know as I’ve been singing throughout my life.

How much longer do you think you can carry on in the industry? Do you have any plans to retire soon?
As long as there are fans who are willing to listen to my music then I will carry on making it. I wanted to reach out to my fans out there, especially those who consistently love and support me, and that’s the reason why I am here in Abu Dhabi again. I really thank them for their overwhelming love and support to me over the years, because that’s how I have managed to reach this stage.

What are your plans after your concert here in the UAE?
At the moment I am doing a movie with [award-winning Filipino actor] Coco Martin and I hope my fans will support me in the upcoming movie. Apart from this, I’m also busy working on The Voice Kids in the Philippines, which I am one of the judges on.
